I was no prize, and I definitely wasn’t the right guy to be a father to your kid.”

“And he was?” She turned her head, her mouth less than an inch away, her eyes finding mine. “So tell me, Jay… How do you feel about kids?”

“Kids are great. It’s their parents that suck.”

A smiled curved her lips as she let out a laugh.

My skin tingled with every taste of her breath she exhaled against my mouth. The cold seeping through my shirt from the rocks behind me did nothing to cool the fire rushing through my blood having her soft, warm hands curled around my neck, her fingertips sinking into my flesh as she held on.

“Parents are scared. Scared they’ll do the wrong thing and their kids will pay the price. Scared they’ll do the right one and their kids won’t need them anymore.”

So which was my father? He had a whole lot to say about how my actions would stain our name in this town, but could it really be that he felt unneeded?

From the day I’d decided the family business was actually what I wanted, that I wanted to work with kids because adults sucked, I’d been making decisions and executing them. I’d been learning every aspect of the business, even the parts we normally hired out because when I finally did turn those parts over to professionals, I needed to know I could understand if there was an issue—or if I was being cheated.

I’d never asked for help. I’d even gone so far as to wave off suggestions. I wanted to prove I could do it. I wanted to prove I could be the man my father hoped I could be. And I had.

So did he really think the crack was mine or was this all fear that he wasn’t needed?

After all, he wasn’t my one call from jail. He would have had to hear from acquaintances around town who worked in the police department that I made bail in order to know to be outside when I walked out those doors.

Was all that anger really about drugs, or about my life taking a scary turn and when it did, I didn’t turn to him?

“Made you think, didn’t I?” she said quietly.

“I’ll never admit it.”

“No, I don’t suppose you would. Prideful and stubborn.”

“Stubborn enough that I’ll get my way with this—with this thing with your ex.”

She shook her head as though humoring me and ran her fingertips over my cheekbone, her gaze locked on my mouth.

The deep breath she sucked in thrust her breasts against me even harder and our mingled breaths stuttered to a brief stop.

“I should have done all the things I wanted to do with you—to you—in this cave when I had the chance,” she murmured. Her lips grazed against mine, not quite a kiss, but such an almost subtle sensation that it intensified the barely-there brush of mouths.

“So do it now, Princess. What’s stopping you?”

“It wouldn’t be the same.”

I cupped her round ass and yanked her up against me, hip to hip.
